Meet Ric Shellhammer | Producer, Filmmaker
Ric brings over 30 years of experience to the role of founder and “jack-of-all-trades” at Pegasus Productions After graduating from Ashland University in Ohio with a BA in Radio/TV, he worked a two year stint as a production
assistant at WEWS-TV, an ABC affiliate in Cleveland, Ohio. In late 1976, he and his wife Kathy moved to Southern California and soon after, Pegasus Productions was established. Over the years, he’s gone from producing simple slide shows to producing award-winning videos for business, education and non-profits.
Besides numerous industry recognitions and awards, his most satisfying was for a co-producing and directing a surf documentary, “The Art of Surfing Carlsbad”, which won a prestigious “Silver” Telly Award as well as Best Short Documentary at the 2010 Fallbrook Film Festival. Also broadcast on the local PBS affiliate, it features over 17 interviews including Surfer’s Journal Steve Pezman, legendary surf photographer LeRoy Grannis, Boogey Board inventor Tom Morey and many other surfing notables.
Ric works hard to to be socially responsible, and in that spirit, regularly donates time and/or facilities to local non-profits and causes. He’s most proud of the recognition for his contribution to archive video testimonies of over 50,000 Holocaust survivors by the Survivors of Shoah Visual History Foundation, founded by Steven Spielberg.
His passion for the documentary and the crafting of unscripted, authentic stories has led recently to focus his interests in a couple of new directions.
Nothing moves like a good story told by the people who are passionately involved with it’s cause. With that in mind, Media Tools for Nonprofits was created. Whether for fundraising, education or advocacy, the program helps nonprofits with the creation and implementation of their digital media strategy. The other focus is what he calls Life Stories. With the view that everyone leads an extraordinary life, Life Stories uses his production experience and storytelling skills to create personal biographies of ordinary people.
Ric has stated “As a self-employed media producer, I get the opportunity to play many roles; listener, director, translator, editor, mediator, mentor, activist and student. It’s that variety of roles, along with the challenges of this ever-changing business, that drives my continued interest in doing what I do.”
